Our Bilingual Pupils
My Mum is Italian and all her family still lives in Milan. She speaks to me in Italian at home, so I can learn the language and communicate with my family in Italy. To be able to speak two languages is very useful now but will be even more so when I’m older. I believe that my knowledge of the Italian language helps me very much in learning Spanish, as some words are almost identical in the two languages (e.g. mother and father are the same, madre and padre; horse in Italian is cavallo and in Spanish is caballo; one and two are uno e due in Italian and uno y dos in Spanish).
ITALIAN TRANSLATION
La mia mamma e’ Italiana e la sua famiglia abita ancora a Milano. Lei mi parla in Italiano a casa, cosi’ io posso imparare la lingua e comunicare con la mia famiglia in Italia. Saper parlare due lingue mi e’ molto utile adesso e quandosaro’grande. Io penso che la mia conoscenza dell’ Italiano mi aiutimolto ad imparare la lingua spagnolo, perche’ un po’ delle parole sono quasi identiche (per esempio, madre e padre sono ugualinelle due lingue; cavallosi dice caballo; uno e due si dice uno y dos).

My mum is Italian. All her family lives in Italy, so we go and visit them whenever we can. I know lots of Italian words and therefore find Spanish easier. I am not frightened to try out Spanish words because some of them sound the same in Italian.
Rosa Allen
My mum is German. We practise German at home with her, because we want to be able to speak German when we visit her family. I love Germany! I think that knowing one language has made it easier for me to learn another one, even though German and Spanish are very different in a lot of ways. There are in fact some similarities e.g. rojo = rot = red.
Arthur Harvey
Our father is Norwegian and most of his family lives in either Norway or Denmark. He speaks Norwegian to all of us at home, so we know lots of words. When we’re in Norway, we try to practise the language as much as possible. It has given us the confidence to learn another language such as Spanish.
Roald and Audun Kristensen
Our dad is Welsh and most of his family still lives in Wales. He has taught us some Welsh words and we are very interested in learning other languages because of this. We all choose Language Golden Times, no matter what the language is, and love attending Spanish Lunchtime Language Clubs whenever we can.
Gethin, Teddy and Lucy Phipps
At home we speak Hungarian because our mother is from Hungary. We were all born in Hungary and only moved to England in 2015,
so we have already had to learn one foreign language, English. We think that being bilingual has definitely helped us to learn another
language and we both love learning Spanish at school.
Balint and Gergö Dombrovszki
As you can see from our family tree, our father is Polish, born in the UK. Even though he was fluent in the language until he was 5 years old, he doesn’t actually speak much Polish any more. His parents were also born in the UK and speak both English and Polish fluently. George and I know a few words, especially about Polish food and celebrations, such as Christmas. Did you know, that on Christmas Eve in Poland, you are not allowed to eat meat!!! Our favourite word in Polish is Wigilia, which means Christmas. We are both very interested in languages because of our family history.
